Trilobites (Trilobita)
Trilobites, meaning “three lobes”, belong to the eldest life-forms and existed from the Cambrian era (521 Million years ago) till the Permian era (251 Million years ago).
They had a strong exoskeleton and many legs.
During geologic history over 150,000 species of trilobites existed. Some of them reached a body length up to 70 centimeters.

They inhabited the sea bottom of primeval ocean except the deep sea. Some species are assumed that they moved swimming.

As well as the extinct ammonites trilobites are important index fossils.
